23- The Night Watch, Rembrandt
It is undoubtedly Rembrandt’s best-known work, and the title ‘Night Watch’ was given to it in the 19th century due to its dark background. It was painted between 1639 and 1642 and is one of the jewels of the permanent exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, an art gallery specialising in Dutch art.
